How to travel to Lipari

IMPORTANT! You reach Lipari only by boat or airfoil so you must plan your travel to be in time at the nearest harbour. If you are at the nearest harbour (in Napoli or Milazzo) at 18.00 you usually will get a boat to the island. If the weather is very bad there may be no boats at all going to the islands.

From Napoli
1. From the harbour you can take an airfoil Usticalines (www.usticalines.it) or SIREMAR (www.siremar.it) to Lipari. This option is not available all the days in the week. This is an expensive alternative not available with bad weather.
2. From the harbour you can take a boat SIREMAR to Lipari. This option is not available all the days in the week.

From Messina
1. From the harbour you can take an airfoil Usticalines (www.usticalines.it) or Siremar (www.siremar.it) to Lipari. The cost 1999 was 32000 lire per person.
2. Take the train to Milzzo
3. Take the bus GIUNTA BUS to Milazzo harbour. The bus station is about 100 meter from the railway station. Ask for it or take a cab.

From Reggio Calabria airport
1. Take a direct bus to Messina immediately after your arrival. Ask for it at the airport as soon as you arrive.
2. Take a local bus to the Reggio Calabria harbour immediately after your arrival. Buy a train ticket to Milazzo and you get tickets for airfoil to Messina and train to Milazzo. Very convenient economically but you have to move around a little with your luggage. This option may not work with bad weather.

From Catania airport
1. Take GIUNTA bus in the afternoon (about 16.00) to Milazzo harbour. (About 10€ per trip)
2. Take a local bus to Catania Railway station. Then take a train to Messina and then to Milazzo (destination Palermo).
3. Shuttle service. Rent a car from MAGGIORE at the airport (office house on the parking zone) and drop it at their office (shared with airfoil office SNAV) in Milazzo. (Around 80€ for a small car, two hours)

4. Stay overnight in Catania or Taormina and continue next day.

From Milazzo central station
1. In Milazzo railway station you can buy bus tickets to the harbour in the bar.
2. Taxi from the railway station to the harbour is also available but terribly expensive for 10 minutes travel.

From Milazzo harbour
1. In the harbour go to the Siremar or Usticalines office (the offices are on the main way in front of the ferryboats) and buy tickets to Lipari. I recommend you to go by boat, it is cheaper and less shaky than with airfoil.
2. N.G.I is a smaller ferry boat company. They have normally the last evening connection from Milazzo to Lipari at 21.00. It is a slow boat that arrives late at midnight to Lipari.

Palermo airport
1. In summertime there is a Usticalines airfoil (www.usticalines.it) going directly to Lipari at about 16.45. Contact Usticalines for more information.
2. Shuttle service. Rent a car with MAGGIORE at the airport and drop it at their office (shared with airfoil office SNAV) in Milazzo.
3. Take the airport bus (La Navetta) to Palermo central station. Taxi is expensive as the travel time is 1 ½ hours. (5 € July 2007) From the central station there are many trains taking you to Milazzo. Travel time from Palermo central station to Milazzo is about 3 hours. (14 € July 2007)

If you missed the latest boat/airfoil to Lipari...
1. Napoli. There is a youth hostel and plenty of Pensione and Hotels. Try the Vulcano Camping Fumarole in Pozzuoli!
2. Napoli. From Napoli you can also take a late night train to Milazzo. This require "wagon lit" reservation! It takes you to Milazzo in 6-7 hours.
3. Palermo. If you come late to Palermo airport its recommended to stay over night in Palermo city. There is a convenient hotel 100 meters from the central station: Hotel Sausele.
4. Milazzo. In Milazzo there are some very nice Pensione and Hotels near the harbour. Just ask for it in the harbour.
5. Taormina. I recommend to stay overnight in Taormina.
